The 'Super Size Me effect' hits McDonald's

McDonald's is to close 25 outlets in the UK, reports The Independent Newspaper. The decision comes as the company has been suffering falling sales and tougher competition from other high street food operators and growing concerns over the nutritional value of their base ingredients.

But the closures are also being seen as a sign that the negative publicity surrounding Morgan Spurlock's documentary 'Super Size Me' has damaged the company's image.

Despite adding salad and fruit options to its menus, and switching its fresh milk products to organic, McDonald's has been unable to prevent a decline in profits and sales. The company blames this on stiffer competition from younger food to go companies. McDonald's itself has a stake in one of these successful young pretenders - Pret a Manger
