Whilst it is fair to say that mainly due to the single handed efforts of Jamie Oliver we have seen a significant increase in the quality of school dinners thoughout the UK. But a new report by the Soil Association and Organix shows that these improvements are not being reflected in the meals served in Britain's main restaurant chains.
According to the survey, it's junk food as normal on the menu with names like 'Candimania', 'Malteser Munch Madness' and 'Chocolate Challenge' dominating the menus of one major family restaurant group.
The 'Raw Meal Deal' report claims that family restaurants are comprehensively failing to offer enough healthy food choices to children. None of the top ten chains surveyed came close to meeting new school dinner 'benchmark' standards and many meals on kids menus were high in salt, sugar and fat and offered little or no fresh fruit or vegetables. Top of the league table was TGI Fridays and bottom was Cafe Rouge for their children's menu 'completely devoid of vegetables.
