Extended Info
Vitamin B1 is part of the water-soluble B-Complex and is not stored in the body. Its active co-enzyme form is Thiamine Diphosphate (TDP), also called Thiamine Pyrophosphate (TPP). The mineral Magnesium is required to convert the vitamin to its co-enzyme form. Vitamin B1 deficiency can lead to a disease called beriberi, which is characterised by fatigue, weight loss, edema and nerve damage which can lead to paralysis.. The B-Vitamins play an important role in the metabolism of fats and proteins and are essential components of enzyme systems that drive the body to form energy from foods to generate new cells. They are necessary for the proper function of the brain and nervous system, production of red blood cells and the healthy maintenance of skin, hair, eyes, intestinal muscles and the liver.
